Soap Making

Join us at the farm to learn the old time craft of soap making the natural process way. If you’ve been using store bought soap, your skin is in for a real treat and will thank you for learning this old homesteaders craft!

While we will not be rendering down the tallow from a prized cow or cooking over an open fire, you will learn to make soap using a variety of readily available oils and good old lye! You will learn to safely calculate lye usage based on the type of oil being used so you will always create a luxurious (and safe) bar of soap. Please note that lye is a caustic substance and while all precautions will be used for safe and proper handling, we ask that registrants be at least 15 years of age and accompanied by an adult.

This workshop will take about two hours to complete and will require you to return the next day (24 hours later) to cut the soap. Each person (or team of two) will be assigned a specific soap recipe. When the soaps are ready to cut, each batch will be shared and traded with all other soaps made. You will go home with three to four bars of each type of soap made; a total of 16-18 bars of soap, with a commercial value of over $80 (that’s a lot of soap)!

Most of your soaps will not be ready to use for another three to four weeks when they have been fully cured. That being said, you will want to make available at your home a cool, dry area that you can store your soaps as they cure. You’ll learn more about this at the workshop.

We will be working in the barn so rain or shine; we’ll be ready for you. Please sign up early, as there is limited space. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Little things to consider before arriving:

  • Wear old but comfortable clothes that you won’t mind if you get a little oil on them
  • Bring reading glasses if you use them
  • Bring a box or basket to take your goodies home in
  • Be aware that these will be natural process soaps, but that doesn’t necessarily mean 100% all natural ingredients. We WILL however, be making at least one batch of completely natural soap.
  • Create an out of the way space at your home to store the soaps for about a month
